Hardboard is more dense than both MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) and HDF (High Density Fibreboard) which makes it less prone to warping whilst still remaining lightweight. The difference between hardboard and materials such as MDF and HDF lies within the manufacturing process. MDF and HDF are are both manufactured using a dry process, whereas hardboard is manufactured using the wet/dry process which relies on the natural binders in the wood to cement the fibres together and make the wood solid. The wet/dry process produces a smooth-two-side-panel where wood particles are exploded by using steam pressure, then are left to float in a vat of water which extracts naturally acidic agents that exist within the wood. The wood fibres are then aligned parallel to the surface and are made into a solid core panel by using heat and pressure.
